Why mulitple systems is not a good idea for companies.

Nintendo and Sony seem to have a lot of deal with lately. Namely the lack of equal support to all of its multiple systems. At this point many can consider these systems in question, dead or near death. Both Sony and Nintendo has been slowly tapping in the coffin nail and all it needed was a few more good raps to seal the deal.

Over the years both Sony and Nintendo expanded into the territory of handheld gaming with opposing results. While Nintendo's less powered hardware thrived, Sony's powerful and capable system was largely left out to dry. It is interesting how reversed the situation is with both companies which extends into their console systems as well.

The Vita has always been troubled. It received a few games but to mixed results and the most notable games are better played on its bigger brother the console PS3. While largely ignored and having less and less presence at large events, the Vita's fate seems to be sealed as a support device to play PS4 games while looking "cool". I cannot say Vita has no games to play but its cost of support hardware (memory) and lack of incentive to own this powerful device has fit the noose on its head. At this point it is clear that Sony is working on a very tight budget while scrambling to support all three systems. Its time to for Sony to decide which device has had its time. If it were up to me I would say the PS3 has lived a full life and its time to put it to rest but then I am no CEO.

On the console side Nintendo has had very troubled history. While the WII can be framed as a success story, it came a crippling cost which cost many to lost trust in Nintendo to deliver or stay relevant. Nintendo's following actions and slew of ill timed releases did little to dissuade the building angst within the remaining community. Nintendo further alienated or burn longstanding bridges with well known third party developers with its conservatively eccentric nature, which leaves little for them to work with beyond the exhausted mascots.

For a little while, it seemed Nintendo was finally ready to put more focus on its failing console hardware with prospects of few but new IPs that were new to the WII U. However, it seemed Nintendo was secretly launching an air strike at its own community. Begs to wonder, if the king of games has finally gone mad?

Weather fans want to compare numbers or argue the future of their respective brandware one thing is true... there is a tight budget to maintain and with the soaring cost of new technology both companies have to tighten their belts further. In Sony's case the PS3 support is definitely keeping a large chunk of the community from upgrading as there are still content being released. There is a slight tug of war between resources between the last gen and new gen hardware and vita is left alone. Its hardly surprising when the last few dedicated developers decide to remake their exclusive titles for the vita into a much bigger and better form for the PS4. Whats worse is Sony's waste of resources on digital streaming of its game to match hollow demand of backwards compatibility. One thing is clear to me is that Sony's success tends to inflate its fat head fast and once again they are trying to stretch themselves by overkill of multiple projects and support.

Through history Nitendo's focus on console hardware has largely been about keeping up to the "lowest minimum" that applies to relevance. The WII was similarly timed bait which was successful that one time which cost its reputation and a similar bait this time did not take hold. Since then their reclusive nature has done nothing but make it focus on its handhelds more and let the new pseudo next gen hardware to rot. With the light of a new system that is looking to cut into both markets at this time just feels like a low blow to the fans. Its understandable that the 3Ds isn't raking in as much profit to offest the loss of the WII U. If the New 3DS does not deliver new content and keeps rehashing older titles from older hardware, I doubt this system will have much more success than the WII U. The question begs to be asked is, if newer games need a more powerful system, why not make it for the console?

In short both companies remind me of Mister Magoo trying to sail a docked ship.
